About Etzel Cardeña

Etzel Cardeña holds the endowed Thorsen Professorship in Psychology at Lund University, where he leads the Center for Research on Consciousness and Anomalous Psychology (CERCAP). His main areas of research include alterations of consciousness and anomalous experiences (including psi), dissociative and posttraumatic reactions, the neurophenomenology of hypnosis and transcendent experiences, and the stream of consciousness during waking and altered states.

He was born and raised in México City and did postgraduate work in Canada and the US, culminating in a Ph. D. from the University of California, Davis (Charles Tart, supervisor) and a postdoc position at Stanford University (David Spiegel, supervisor). He has about 400 publications, some in top journals in psychology and related disciplines such as American Journal of Psychiatry, American Psychologist, Annual Review of Clinical Psychology, Journal of Abnormal Psychology, Journal of Experimental Psychology, Psychological Bulletin, and others. His research, theoretical, pedagogical, and historical contributions have received many awards from various professional organizations. 

His publications have been covered by various media including the New York Times, the New Yorker, the BBC, and many other media, and he has also worked professionally as a theater visiting artist, director, actor, and playwright.
